It stands on the higher part of the
town near the ancient towers. It was built in 1202 in gothic style
and the entrance was on via S. Lucia, after a long and very scenic
steps culminating in a portico.
The entrance portal was made of peperino stone. On the southern
side there is the belfry. The original structure consisted of
a nave and two aisles, but at present there is only the nave
characterized by a series of pillars and transverse pointed
spans. On the southern side there is a part of the aisle with
ruins of an original mullions and the space once occupied by
the bell tower. Among the interior decorations there are ruins
of mullions and of a gothic tabernacle, various inscriptions,
ruins of mosaics and stained glass windows.
The high altar indeed has been transferred in the Church of
San Barnaba. Recently, under the floor of the nave it has been
found a wide Roman water tank, whose construction's age
has not been yet defined. Probably this tank was utilized before
the Church's construction as a place to celebrate the
cult. Presently this church has been transformed in a museum;
in this museum there is the antiquarium, which once was in the
Colonna's palace and was destroyed by bombardments during
the second world war.
