The construction works, ordered by
the cardinal G. Colonna began in 1644, following the design of
A. del Grande. It was built over the ruins of the previous Crocifisso
church of the 12th century, and its construction ended only in
1754, because of funds problems.
The church collapsed at the beginning of the 19th century.
It was rebuilt in its present form by D. Palmucci and L. Bracci.
It was decorated with various works, among which a painting
of Perin del Vaga and a ciborium of 1517 coming from the Church
del Crocifisso and with mural paintings by several artists.
In the church there is a painting representing the Madonna della
Pietà, by T. P. Labruzzi, very worshipped from citizens.
